IIT JEE Mains has been one of the toughest entrance examinations in the country ever since the inception of the premier institutes of technology. To crack this examination and get a good rank, one needs to follow a systematic preparation plan. Under this plan an aspirant needs to be thorough with topics in all subjects, with special emphasis on certain topics. Here is the list of topics that need to be given special attention:

  1. Physics
  • Absolutely essential topics- Rotational motion, current electricity, magnetic effect of current and magnetism, Newton’s laws of motion, Electrostatics, atoms and nuclei
  • Should be done topics– Thermodynamics, Work power and energy, Solids and liquids, EM Waves, Kinematics, Optics, electronic devices
  • As per availability of time– AC, Dual nature of matter and radiation, gravitation, KTG, physics and measurement
  1. Maths
  • Absolutely essential topics- Probability, conic sections, Vector algebra, Sets relation and function, straight line, matrices and determinants, Trigonometry, integrals
  • Should be done topics– Continuity and derivability, Permutations and Combinations, Limits, Quadratic Equations, Circles, Binomial theorem, Differential equations, sequences and series
  • As per availability of time- Applications of derivatives, heights and distances, statistics, mathematical reasoning, mathematical induction, applications of integrals
  1. Chemistry
  • Absolutely essential topics- Chemical kinetics, transition elements, S-block elements, basic principles of organic chemistry, chemical bonding, thermodynamics, P-block, coordination compounds
  • Should be done topics– Biomolecules, electrochemistry, atomic structure, polymer, solid state, periodic table, some basic concepts in chemistry
  • As per availability of time- Environmental chemistry, surface chemistry, metallurgy, chemistry in everyday life, states of matter, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, purification of compounds

Though you can see a list of all the major topics above, experts have still warned aspirants to consider all topics important. This is because the paper pattern in JEE 2017 Mains is going to be different than previous years, as is the case every year. It can either be very easy or extremely difficult.

Now let us discuss the weightages of different topics as expected in the final exam:

  1. Physics

The following are the most basic topics in Physics. You can expect a minimum of 1 question from these topics:

TopicWeightages
Units and Dimensions2%
Vectors Not available
Measurement of errors2%

newtons-pendulum

Topics mentioned in the following table are recognised as fundamentals for physics. 1-2 questions are expected from this section in the paper:

Topic Weightages
Kinematics1%
Friction Not Available
Newton’s laws of motions4%

The next 5 topics are relatively easy to score. You must not lose an opportunity to score marks amongst these:

Topic Weightages
Current Electricity7%
Wave Optics5%
Ray Optics6%
Work, Energy and power5%
Electrostatics6%

Consider the following 9 topics as difficult, since you can expect several twisted questions from this section. It goes without saying that you must be well aware of the basics and must also practice a lot. 2-3 questions are likely to be asked for this section:

Topic Weightages
Rotational Dynamics4%
Simple Harmonic Motion5%
Centre of Mass, Momentum and collision5%
Fluid mechanics- Bernoulli’s principle is easily twisted for difficult questions2-5%
Magnetism6%
Heat and Thermodynamics- Important for both physics and chemistry6%
Modern Physics5%
Nuclear Physics5%

Some of the students who have passed out from IIT and BIT also recommend aspirants to watch tutorial videos on some of the concepts. This can be done in the case of Simple Harmonic Motion. For those who get into Architecture, SHM is of immense use.

Then there are topics which are necessary to be studied at least once. These topics have a large number of formulae and so flash cards must be created to revise the same. 3-4 questions can be expected from the following topics:

Topic Weightages
Circular Motion1%
Gravitation1%
Electromagnetic Induction3%
Alternate Current1%
Properties of Elasticity and matter2%
Calorimetry Not Available
Heat Transfer Not Available
Thermo Electricity Not Available
Thermal Expansion Not Available
Communication Systems2%
Electric devices and Semiconductors5%

Top tip: In comparison to JEE Main, JEE Advanced has slightly different syllabus requirements. Therefore students must ensure they study all topics and not do selective study. Logically speaking, once they qualify the Mains, students will not have to spend extra time studying more topics.

  1. Maths

The following topics can be considered as fundamental to JEE mains 2017 preparation:

mathematics

Topic Weightages
Sequence and series5%
Inverse Trigonometric functions2%

Then there are relatively easy topics also in the syllabus. One must try to maximise the score here and not commit silly mistakes:

Topic Weightages
Limits and Continuity3%
Matrices and Determinants4%
Applications of Derivatives4%
Straight lines and pair of straight lines2%

Top tip: Keep your mind refreshed and in good shape by working on 3-4 questions from various topics every day. It will keep you in good rhythm before JEE Mains 2017.

Consider the topics mentioned ahead as most important for this examination. Questions of varied difficulty can be expected from here. 2-3 questions from most of these 7 topics can be expected in the paper:

Fundamentals of Mathematics Not Available
Permutation and Combination (study this properly- its concepts are needed in probability)2%

  1. Chemistry

Chemistry is one of those subjects in which it is possible to study selectively and still get a good score. The major reason for the above is that most concepts here involve the periodic table, bond formation and breaking. With a rock solid grasp on fundamentals, you can make life easy for yourself during preparation for 2017 IIT JEE Mains.

A brief overview of the important topics to be studied by you includes:

  • Solid state, Solutions and gases theory
  • Carbonyl compounds and derivatives
  • Chemical bonding and periodic table- It is the most important topic for JEE preparation. If you master this, it will be of help for many years to come
  • Mole Concept, Redox reactions and equivalents
  • Thermochemistry, Second Law of Thermodynamics
